I had seen them before
The mountains
Had declined to follow
My fellows beyond the snow-line
Till I was taken up there
Willy nilly by a guide
Absorbed by the glorious eyes of the sky
And the sublime biting air
I climbed and climbed and climbed
But when I was too cold and raw to crave
When my skin was stripped
Down to essentials, to blood and to water and to skin
Against the rearing rocks
Not knowing the best move to take
I turned to speak
My guide was then
a speck
Laughing at the old joke
Descending alone
Ant like into the valleys.
The mountains
Had declined to follow
My fellows beyond the snow-line
Till I was taken up there
Willy nilly by a guide
Absorbed by the glorious eyes of the sky
And the sublime biting air
I climbed and climbed and climbed
But when I was too cold and raw to crave
When my skin was stripped
Down to essentials, to blood and to water and to skin
Against the rearing rocks
Not knowing the best move to take

My guide was then

Laughing at the old joke
Descending alone
